Gansbaai Thatch House is situated in the hub of the fishing village named after a flock of wild Egyptian geese said to have congregated at the freshwater fountain next to the harbour. We are located within walking distance to banks, shopping centers, pubs, restaurants and our local tourism office.Known as the Big 2 Town, Gansbaai is world renowned for the Southern Right Whales that visit the Atlantic waters of the Danger Point Peninsula predominantly between June and October, and the omnipresence of Great White Sharks. Situated in Walker Bay, at the foot of the Dynefontein Mountains, between the tourist Mecca of Hermanus and Pearly Beach, expect to rub shoulders with the locals, with adrenaline junkies and naturists, film crews, photographers and scientists alike. Solitude is as easy to experience at the Gansbaai Thatch House as are the abundance of activities available within close proximity. Marlene Bornman, Reiki Master, provides a holistic method of healing that relieves stress and balances the body's energy, on site. Your host, Adriayn Weich, Diver Master/ former restaurateur, will show you the little things in the big picture of life as you experience the tranquility,and thrill, of diving with the Cape fur seals in the vicinity of Geyser Island. The coast provides ideal conditions for anglers and Adriayn will arrange for the hiring of any diving or fishing equipment, that you may need. Ganbaai is home to an ancient indigenous forest, vineyards, flower farms butif it is simply a fynbos walk you desire... then it is as easy as stepping out the door and following the trail to Wolfieskop. An alternate walkabout to explore is the harbour, within 1km, to experience first hand the pulse of our fishing industry. Be cautioned: if you're fortunate enough you mayget to experience what locals refer to as ‘the smell of money' which emanate from the fish meal factory. The cliffs at De Kelders, the Afrikaans name for The Caves and situated 3km from Gansbaai, is the ideal vantage point to spot the whales that venture to within a few meters of the shore. The area has numerous caves, which penetrate into the rocks in various depths, and De Kelders cave is the only freshwater cave on the coast of Africa. Danger Point is notorious for shipwrecks along its many reefs and uncharted rocks, and extends 8km into the sea, 9km from Gansbaai. Kleinbaai is 6km from Gansbaai, the launching site for the shark cage diving boats and the golf course. A tarred road provides access to the lighthouse at Danger Point and the coastline can be explored by the hiking tracks impressed by vehicles that previously travelled this route. Dyer Island is 12km from Kleinbaai harbour. It is a 20ha Nature Reserve that is home to African Penguins, endangered Bank Cormorant, African Black Oystercatchers, Kelp and Hartlaub's Gulls amongst others. The Grootmelkhoutbos hiking trail is about an hour long walk along the Grootmelkhoutbos hiking trail in the Franskraal Conservation area, 7km from Gansbaai. To venture a little further, 30km out of Gansbaai, is Baardskeerdersbos. It is so named after the spiders that are said to chomp off human hair to make nests. Arum lilies line the hilly landscape, around streams, and stand sentry outside vineyards. B'bos offers a unique floral kingdom, hikes, horse trails and 4x4 trails. Whether you are in the Overberg to enjoy our world famous sites, breathtaking dives, a community that is untouched by large scale tourism developments Gansbaai Thatch House strives to make your visit as comfortable as possible. The Upper Comfort Zone has a Queen size bed, a luxury sleeper couch and a balcony that faces the mountain. Luxury linen and towels, a hair dryer, TV, and a personal safe are provided for your valuables. For your convenience you have exclusive use of a bathroom. The unit downstairs has a Queen size bed, a luxury sleeper couch and it's own small lounge, together with the use of the communal living area. This room has a kitchenette with basic appliances and utensils for your convenience, and a designated shower room. While the garden is in its infancy it provides ample space to soak up the sun, for privacy, and to barbecue until the stars herald quiet time in Gansbaai.
